The Antevasin

    by Annette Gagliardi
She lives at the border
Always dreaming.
A non-conformist,
She is not a villager.
No household calls to her.

She is in sight of the forest.
Ever searching.
No sage or deity of the woods.
She waits for no soul
To bid her enter.

She stand with one foot in two worlds
Constantly learning.
An in-between - - a border-dweller
She studies the unknown
Traveling lightly.

ANTEVASIN: means “one who lives at the border.” (Sanskrit) this indicates a person who had left the bustling center of worldly life to go live at the edge of the forest where the spiritual masters dwell. The antevasin was not one of the villagers anymore—not a householder with a conventional life. The antevasin was an in-betweener; A border-dweller; one who lived in sight of both worlds, but looked toward the unknown. A scholar.

That simmering line between your old thinking and your new understanding, always in a state of learning. This is the border that is always moving.

This sounds a little lonely, and I can relate. It seems we are all "standing on the edge" of something at some time in our lives, or always. You put it so well. Thanks for your insight.

In Islamic Concept, such people are called the ones who have run away from Reality ... These are the Mystics ... The seculars ... meaning, Logicians call them, Metaphysicians.

Shahid,

Thank you for the culturally specific information.

Yes. these people live on the edge - of community life. They run away from reality - that is accurate for each culture, I think.

The Antevasin - still watching from the edge of time.

Still lurking lonely and alone

The Antevasin - still holding onto the lip of life

- still sucking the marrow, chewing the bone
